HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT IMMIGRATION LAWYER

It's hard to know what makes a good lawyer.  It's usually best if you already know a good immigration lawyer.  But what if you don't?

Before you buy a car, you always learn about it.  You want to know its cost, mileage, trunk space, horsepower, etc.

Choosing a lawyer should be no different.  But strangely, a lot of people choose a lawyer without knowing anything about them, or what a good lawyer is.

That's like buying a car without knowing what a car is.

For immigration lawyers, here are four basic questions you want to ask:

  1. How much of your practice is immigration?
  2. How long have you been a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA)?
  3. How do you determine your fees?
  4. How do you communicate with your clients?

These questions will tell you how devoted the lawyer is to the practice of immigration law.  You don't want to go to someone who does immigration "on the side." And if the lawyer has not been a member of AILA for very long (should be at least 5 years) then they're either new to immigration, or aren't serious enough to become a member of AILA, the national bar of immigration lawyers.  Asking about fees and communication gives you a glimpse into the lawyer's office. If he can give you a clear answer, it is likely he has procedures to handle your case.

Also, you want to note how quickly the lawyer responded to you, whether he has assistants (lawyers who don't have assistants tend to be very overworked) and whether you can find anything bad written about your lawyer online.  Type in the attorney's name and the word "attorney" into a search engine and see what comes up; bad lawyers typically have angry clients who post things about them.

Lastly, know that an attorney-client relationship is a two-way street.  That means you should feel comfortable with your lawyer, not angry or afraid.  Your lawyer is and should be a trusted adviser, so work with your lawyer and you will find that the process of solving your legal problem will be much easier.
